MỘT KINH NGHIỆM CẢI TẠO NHÀ Ở TRUYỀN THỐNG BẮC BỘ

Dù chưa có thống kê chính thức nhưng hiện nay ở khu vực đồng bằng Bắc Bộ còn lại không nhiều những ngôi nhà ở truyền thống làm bằng gỗ. Những năm 1960, cuộc Cải cách ruộng đất đã phá hủy gần hết những ngôi nhà gỗ truyền thống ở nông thôn miền Bắc. Những ngôi nhà chưa bị phá, phần lớn buộc phải đổi chủ, rồi cũng bị hư hại và bị rút ruột lấy gỗ sử dụng cho việc khác (Có ai lại tiếc thương một ngôi nhà không phải do mình dựng lên?). Còn lại rất ít những ngôi nhà mà người chủ gốc của nó vẫn còn được sử dụng đến ngày hôm nay, và cũng đến lúc thời gian nhắc nhở họ phải cải tạo nhà của mình. Dưới đây là một vài kinh nghiệm nhỏ của tác giả khi thực hiện cải tạo một nhà gỗ truyền thống ở tỉnh Hải Dương.
 
Khái niệm “nhà”
Một trong những sự khác biệt căn bản giữa một ngôi nhà truyền thống bằng gỗ với ngôi nhà hiện đại (bằng gạch, đá, bê tông…) là trong khi khái niệm “nhà” hiện đại gắn liền với mảnh đất xây dựng thì “nhà” gỗ truyền thống gắn liền với hệ gỗ. Khái niệm “ngôi nhà” trên thế giới nói chung và ở Việt Nam hiện đại nói riêng được hiểu như là đồng thời với khu đất xây dựng, bởi vì kết cấu ngôi nhà gắn liền với nền móng thuộc khu đất ấy, không dỡ ra dịch chuyển được. Nhà gỗ truyền thống thì khác, nó là một hệ kết cấu độc lập với nền đất, các chân cột chỉ kê lên đá tảng. Do đó, ngôi nhà có thể dịch chuyển từ nơi này đến nơi khác, có thể tháo ra trùng tu rồi ghép lại, có thể đổi chủ này sang chủ khác, rốt cục nó vẫn là ngôi nhà ấy. Tuổi thọ của ngôi nhà được tính từ lần dựng đầu tiên. Nói như vậy để thấy rằng cái tinh thần của hệ gỗ rất mạnh, nó mạnh đến nỗi lấn át được tinh thần của khu đất xây dựng. Do đó, trong việc kiến tạo nơi chốn cho nhà gỗ truyền thống, kiến trúc sư phải chú ý đến tinh thần của hệ gỗ trước tiên rồi mới đến các yếu tố khác như phong thủy, kiểu dáng, hoạt động con người…
 
Giá trị tinh thần của thượng lương
Trong hệ gỗ, cấu kiện thượng lương được coi là quan trọng nhất về mặt tinh thần, bởi nó ở vị trí cao nhất của nóc, dân gian có câu “con không cha như nhà không nóc”. Trong các lễ nghi của việc xây nhà, lễ thượng lương được dân gian chú ý hơn cả ngày khánh thành, phải chọn ngày giờ cận thận cho khoảnh khắc đặt thượng lương vào hệ gỗ. Ngày nay, các chủ đầu tư nhà bê tông hiện đại vẫn giữ được nghi lễ cất nóc (đổ xong mái tầng trên cùng), đó là một tín ngưỡng tốt đẹp. 
 
Ngôi nhà mà chúng tôi thực hiện cải tạo, nó được dựng lần đầu năm Thành Thái thứ mười ba (1902) ở một nơi khác, gia đình người chủ hiện tại đã mua về và dựng lại vào năm Khải Định thứ bảy (1923). Khi dựng lại năm 1923, người chủ mới vẫn giữ nguyên thượng lương gian giữa (vị trí quan trọng nhất về mặt tinh thần của hệ gỗ) có khắc chữ ngày dựng lần đầu, và chỉ cho khắc chữ ngày dựng lại vào gian bên. Điều đó cho thấy người chủ mới đó đã rất tôn trọng quá khứ của ngôi nhà, và tuổi của ngôi nhà được tính từ năm 1902 chứ không phải 1923.
 
Khi cải tạo ngôi nhà này năm 2016, chúng tôi quyết định giữ nguyên các thượng lương có khắc ngày dựng năm 1902 và 1923 dù các cấu kiện này đã bị mủn, buộc phải gia cố, đắp, ghép bằng kỹ thuật đặc biệt. Vậy, kinh nghiệm tiếp theo là khi cải tạo nhà gỗ truyền thống, kiến trúc sư nên dùng mọi cách để giữ lại thượng lương.
 
Gìn giữ mạch nơi chốn
Theo lý thuyết Trường/Mạch, nơi chốn được đồng thời nhận diện bởi hai yếu tố: trường và mạch (xem sách Các cấu trúc tinh thần của nghệ thuật). Trường là mối liên hệ giữa công trình kiến trúc với đất đai, phong thủy, môi trường tự nhiên xung quanh, với con người hiện tại; nó thể hiện tính không gian của nơi chốn. Mạch là dòng chảy lịch sử của công trình, là những câu chuyện, sự kiện gắn liền với các thế hệ con người; nó thể hiện tính thời gian của nơi chốn. Vì lí do lịch sử xã hội và số lượng con cháu phát triển nên ngôi nhà này bị mất hết cảnh quan vườn cây ao cá nguyên gốc, tức là yếu tố trường không thể đảm bảo được. Bởi vậy, chúng tôi tập trung vào việc giữ gìn yếu tố mạch của nơi chốn, bằng cách giữ lại nguyên bản các cấu kiện nhiều nhất có thể.
 
Do chiến tranh, khí hậu khắc nghiệt của miền Bắc và được bảo trì không đúng cách, sau gần 100 năm sử dụng, ngôi nhà bị xuống cấp nghiêm trọng. Khi tiến hành cải tạo, chúng tôi đã đưa ra giải pháp là tận dụng tối đa những cấu kiện cũ, cái nào có thể sửa chữa chắp vá được thì vẫn dùng và tuyệt đối không sơn, không đánh dầu bóng lên chúng để giữ nguyên vẻ thâm nâu của thời gian. Khi hoàn thành, những cấu kiện thâm nâu cũ kỹ được ghép bên cạnh những cấu kiện tươi mới, cho thấy sự biến chuyển của thời gian ở công trình.
 
Điểm đặc biệt nhất của công trình này là chúng tôi quyết định giữ lại một góc tường đầu hồi, nơi người ông quá cố của chủ nhà khắc những lời răn dạy con cháu lên đó. Để làm được điều này, ngôi nhà buộc phải dịch chuyển gần 2m so với vị trí cũ. Giữa những mảng tường mới xây, một góc tường cũ kỹ nguyên gốc hóa ra lại tạo nên vẻ đẹp kỳ lạ cho ngôi nhà. Chính điểm “kỳ dị” này giúp cho các thế hệ con cháu có thể hồi tưởng nhớ về tổ tiên của mình một cách trực quan thông qua kiến trúc. Và kinh nghiệm thứ ba là kiến trúc sư nên cố gắng giữ lại nguyên bản một chi tiết nhà cũ gắn liền với một sự kiện hoặc một con người đáng nhớ của gia chủ. Điều đó sẽ làm ngôi nhà có chiều sâu tinh thần hơn.
 
Triển vọng của bảo tồn/ xây mới
Bất cứ một công trình nào cũng có lịch sử của mình, và rồi đến lúc nào đó nó bị xuống cấp, không thể không cải tạo. Giải pháp thường thấy là người ta đập nó đi rồi xây một công trình mới. Dù cho có xây mới lại giống hệt như cũ thì cũng chỉ lưu lại được kí ức hình ảnh chứ không giữ được yếu tố tinh thần siêu linh của công trình mà thời gian lưu giữ cho con người. Phương án lưu giữ, bảo tồn được các chi tiết quan trọng nhất của cái cũ bên cạnh cái mới có thể thông minh và nhân văn hơn chăng? Đó là một dạng nước đôi bảo tồn/ xây mới. Nguyên lý này có thể áp dụng trong việc cải tạo những ngôi nhà gỗ truyền thống khác ở nông thôn nói riêng và các công trình kiến trúc nói chung, đồng thời tránh những phương án đập đi xây mới hoàn toàn, gây tranh cãi bức xúc hiện nay như Trụ sở Hội Quảng Tri (Huế), rạp Hòa Bình (Đà Lạt)…
